Studies on the Completed Torah

As to the Redeemed in Yeshua HaMashiach

Part 11

Studies on the Third Commandment

Introduction

You shall not take the name of Y’HOVAH your ELOHIYM in vain; for Y’HOVAH will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.

Exodus 20:7

This commandment, like the first two, is a Negative concept of law – thou shalt not.

Compare with a Positive concept of the law – honour thy father and thy mother; remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

Negative concepts in the law establish human rights:

·         If Y’hovah prohibits it, who is man to overrule it?

·         Negative concepts are specific to the given evil that is prohibited (non-expansive)

o   The prohibition is therefore limited in scope

·         Negative concepts ensure liberty

o   That which is not prohibited is therefore allowed

Negativity in law is the preservation of the positive life and freedom of man.

Positive concepts in the law provide for the rise of an unlimited tyranny

·         The state obtains jurisdiction over all aspects of life that are less than perfect

·         Everything becomes part of the state’s jurisdiction

o   The command is unlimited in scope

o   The state may rule over any aspect of life that fails to meet its goal of perfection

o   No area of liberty can exist for man

·         Positivism ultimately punishes the responsible with total liability

·         Positivism ultimately protects the criminals and the fools

Positivism in law is central to every totalitarian regime.

Exegesis of Exodus 7

You shall not take . . . The word for take in the Hebrew is נָשָׂא naw-saw’ .  This means to bear, to advance, to carry, to hold up, to magnify, to swear, to take up), to wear, and others.

. . . in vain.  The word for vain in the Hebrew is שָׁוְא shawv’ which means to take in an evil way, or immorally, or in idolatry, falsely, or for purposes of vanity.  This also reaches to mean in a vulgar, profane, obscene, useless or common way.

Let’s apply:

Ambassadorship:

You shall not bear the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an evil way.  (blasphemy)

You shall not bear the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an immoral way.

You shall not bear the name of Yehovah your Elohiym falsely. (false witness)

You shall not bear the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a vulgar way.

You shall not bear the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a common way.

Tarnishing your light:

You shall not advance the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an evil way.

You shall not advance the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an immoral way.

You shall not advance the name of Yehovah your Elohiym falsely.

You shall not advance the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a vulgar way.

You shall not advance the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a common way.

Ambassadorship:

You shall not carry the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an evil way.

You shall not carry the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an immoral way.

You shall not carry the name of Yehovah your Elohiym falsely.

You shall not carry the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a vulgar way.

You shall not carry the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a common way.

Cursing:

You shall not swear by the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an evil way.

You shall not swear by the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in an immoral way.

You shall not swear by the name of Yehovah your Elohiym falsely.

You shall not swear by the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a vulgar way.

You shall not swear by the name of Yehovah your Elohiym in a common way.

Swearing has traditionally been viewed as subversive to social and religious institutions by profanely invoking the name of Y’hovah in his manifestations (Y’hovah El Shaddai, Yeshua HaMeshiach, Ruach HaKodesh), and is in fact subversive to the Holiness of Elohiym, because it declares that Y’hovah is common, vulgar, false, immoral, and unworthy of worship.

Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Matthew 5:33-37

Various forms of swearing (according to Ashley Montagu, anthropologist):

  • Swearing as a form of verbal aggression;
  • Swearing as cursing, calling down evil upon the subject
  • Swearing as profanity, using the name(s) of Elohiym within the speech
  • Swearing as blasphemy, ridiculing the name(s) of Elohiym
  • Swearing as obscenity, using indecent phrases and words
  • Swearing as vulgarity, using crude words
  • Euphemistic swearing, a form of swearing which references by implication the common and well-known vulgar, profane and blasphemous terms used by God-haters, but uses mild, or vague “acceptable” terms instead, but which carry essentially the same meaning.

The Profane

The term “profane” comes from the Latin pro which means “before” and fanum, which means “temple.”  Profane is that which is outside the temple.

All human action that is outside the Holiness of Elohiym is therefore profane by definition.  This includes all forms of secularism, including secular humanism, and the novus order seclorum (the New Secular Order) sought by our founders in the creation of the Great Seal of the United States.

  • All speech
  • All action
  • All living

Profanity is directly tied to the destruction of the social order:

  • Profanity is antithetical to faith; no athetical (it is opposite to; not without)
    • Godly swearing is a form of vow taking
    • Profane swearing is a deliberate corruption of the of the oath of God
      • Denies God is its essence
      • Posits an alternative in its place
  • The Godly seek confirmation from Elohiym
  • The ungodly seek confirmation from below
    • Usually found in references to sex or excrement
      • Powers of the underworld of unconsciousness, primitive, animalism
    • Denying the true Elohiym, the profane promote revolution, chaos, rebellion
  • The ungodly do not remain constant in their profanity, but progress downward
    • Denying of Elohiym becomes defiance to Elohiym
    • References to sex soon become references to perverted forms of sex

What the profane first invoke in word, they soon invoke in actual deed.

Verbal profanity is an oral witness to a social profanity.

Mt 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of Y’HOVAH.

Matthew 4:4

Mt 15:11 Not that which goes into the mouth defiles a man; but that which comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man.

Matthew 15:11

A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Luke 6:45

But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

Matthew 12:36-37

Profanity is indicative or a moral revolution in progress.

  • Revolution is invited and encouraged in a society that seeks an integration downward
    • The study of Y’hovah is barred from the schools
    • The knowledge of the profane is taught and encouraged
  • False swearing represents a subversive drive in society
  • When vulgar, profane, and false swearing becomes inculcated in literature, art, film and music, the profane becomes subversive and religious
    • Hence, Madonna was celebrated – mostly because of her name and her willingness to blaspheme the one true Elohiym
    • Lady Gaga – named after the Babylonian false goddess Ishtar and presenting herself in Babylonian fertility goddess context is exalted for the same reason

You shall not take the name of Y’hovah your Elohiym in vain:

  • Negative construct: You shall not take the name of other gods or powers.
  • Positive construct: You shall take the name of Y’hovah your Elohiym in righteousness and truth.
